If you're still on a personal profile, switching to a business account unlocks the tools you actually need to grow: Insights, contact buttons, ad capabilities, and Meta Business Suite. Here's how to do it, and what to do with the data once you have it.

How to switch to a business account

The process takes about two minutes. Here's the exact path:

  • Open your Instagram profile and tap the three lines (hamburger menu) in the top-right corner.
  • Go to Settings and privacy.
  • Tap Account type and tools.
  • Select Switch to professional account.
  • Choose the category that best describes you (e.g., "Local business," "Digital creator").
  • Select Business (not Creator — Business is better suited for companies, Creator is for individual influencers).

Once you're set up, connect your Facebook Page. This is required for running ads through Meta, and it unlocks Meta Business Suite for managing both platforms together.

What you unlock

  • Instagram Insights — your analytics dashboard
  • Contact buttons — email, phone, and directions on your profile
  • Stories link support — add links to Stories regardless of follower count
  • Meta Business Suite — schedule posts, manage messages, and run ads across Facebook and Instagram
  • Professional Dashboard — track reach, engagement, follower growth, and content performance

How to read your Insights

Open your profile and tap Professional Dashboard under your bio. Here's what each metric actually means:

Reach vs. Impressions

Reach is how many unique accounts saw your content. Impressions is how many total times your content was seen (including repeat views). Reach is the more important metric — it tells you how many individual people you actually connected with.

Accounts engaged

How many unique accounts interacted with your content (likes, comments, shares, saves). This tells you whether your content is sparking action, not just passive views.

Follower activity

The times of day when your followers are most active. Post during these windows to maximise early engagement, which feeds the algorithm's cold-start testing phase.

Content performance

Which of your posts got the most reach and engagement. Look for patterns: which topics, formats, and posting times consistently perform well. Then do more of what works.

The new Competitive Insights feature

Instagram's Professional Dashboard now includes Competitive Insights, which lets you track up to 10 competitor accounts. You can see their follower growth, engagement rates, and top-performing content — without any third-party tools.

What to do with this

Switch to a business account today — it's free and takes two minutes. Check your Professional Dashboard once a week. Track reach and sends, not likes. Use Competitive Insights to see what's working in your niche. And connect your Facebook Page so you can use Meta Business Suite to schedule content in advance.
