Instagram removed a post or gave you a violation warning. It happens for a lot of reasons — sometimes correctly, sometimes not. Here's what you can actually do about it, based on Instagram's own Help Center.
What a violation warning is
When Instagram removes content that violates its Community Guidelines, it adds a violation warning to your account. That warning stays there unless you remove it. If you don't remove it, it can affect your account's standing and, in some cases, its eligibility for recommendation.
How to remove a first-time violation warning
Instagram's Help Center explains that if you've been given a first-time violation warning in the past year, you can remove it. Here's the exact path: View source ↗
- Go to your profile.
- Tap More in the bottom left, then Settings.
- Tap Account Status.
- Tap Removed content and message issues.
- Tap Removed content.
- Tap Request review.
If you're eligible, Instagram will remove the warning from your account. You'll be asked to read the relevant policy and confirm you understand it. You can also share context about what happened (for example, "I didn't know the rule").
What happens after you remove the warning
- The violation warning is removed from your account.
- The removed content is not restored. Removing the warning is separate from appealing the content removal itself.
- You only get one chance to remove a first-time warning within a 12-month period.
If your content was removed and you want it back, you need to submit a separate appeal through the review process. Removing the warning doesn't do that.
If you don't see the option to remove the warning
Instagram's Help Center says two things cause this:
- This isn't your first violation warning in the past year.
- Your warning doesn't qualify for removal.
Either way, you can still check your Account Status to see everything Instagram has removed from your account. If you believe a removal was wrong, you can request a review from there.
How to see everything Instagram has removed
Go to your profile → More → Settings → Account Status → Removed content and message issues. That screen lists everything Instagram has removed for violating Community Guidelines, and from there you can request a review on individual items.
What to do with this
If Instagram removed a post and gave you a warning: open Account Status, find the removed content, and request a review. If it's your first warning in the past year, you can remove the warning itself. But remember: removing the warning doesn't bring the post back. If you want the post restored, you have to appeal the removal separately.
